Voices of Equality: Randall C. Bailey
Dr. Randall C. Bailey is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Hebrew Bible at Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Bailey is a native of Malden, MA. He received the BA from Brandeis University, the MA in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago, the MDiv from Candler School of Theology and the Ph.D. in Old Testament from Emory University.
Prior to coming to ITC Dr. Bailey taught at the Atlanta University School of Social Work and served as Assistant Minister at First Congregational Church, UCC in Atlanta. Dr. Bailey is an ordained Baptist minister and holds his membership at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Dr. Bailey has served on the faculty of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University in New Orleans and has served as Visiting Scholar in Bible at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO, Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., Escola Superior de Téologia in Sao Leopoldo, Brazil, and at the College of the Transfiguration in Grahamstown, South Africa.
Dr. Bailey has served on the Editorial Board of Semeia, a journal of experimental research sponsored by the Society of Biblical Literature and on the Board of Atlanta Interfaith AIDS Network, and as a consultant to The Balm in Gilead, Inc. He has represented the Progressive National Baptist Convention and the American Baptist Churches in the USA on several Program Ministries and the Executive Board of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, where he currently serves as Chair of the Bible Translation and Utilization Committee. Currently he serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Religion and Abuse and on Black Theology: An International Journal.
Dr. Bailey has lectured and preached extensively nationally and internationally. He is the author of one book, David in Love and War: The Pursuit of Power in 2 Samuel 10-12 (Sheffield, 1990), co-editor with Dr. Jacquelyn Grant of the book, The Recovery of Black Presence: An Interdisciplinary Exploration (Abingdon, 1995), co-editor with Dr. Tina Pippin of the Semeia volume, entitled "Race, Class, and the Politics of Bible Translation." (1996), and editor of the Semeia Studies book entitled, Yet With A Steady Beat: Contemporary U. S. Afrocentric Biblical Interpretation (SBL, 2003). He is the author of numerous articles on the Hebrew Bible. He concentrates on the relationship of Ancient Africa and the Hebrew Bible and he specializes in ideological criticism, especially as regards the intersections of race, gender, class, sex, sexuality, nationality and power in the biblical text.
Dr. Bailey is married to Ms. D. Jean Lewis Bailey, formerly of Memphis, TN, and they have two young adult children, Omari and Imani.
