The Council of the City of New York
Proclamation
Whereas:
The Council of New York is pleased and proud to honor Freedom to Marry on the occasion of its 10th anniversary, and Evan Wolfson on the occasion of his 50th birthday; and
Whereas:
Our city has a long tradition of individuals together in the spirit of civic and community pride, individuals dedicated to improving the quality of life for all members of their respective communities; and
Whereas:
Freedom to Marry understands the importance of community involvement and activism. A national nonprofit organization in New York City, it has fought tirelessly over the past ten years to secure marriage equality nationwide; and
Whereas:
Freedom to Marry was founded by Evan Wolfson, a former attorney at the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund who was also co-counsel in Baehr v. Mike, the landmark Hawaii gay marriage case. In 2004, Time Magazine named him one of the "100 most influential people in the world;" and
Whereas:
A premier rights organization, Freedom to Marry fights for access to civil marriage through litigation, legislation, direct action and education. Whether assisting other campaigns, forming alliances or funding similar movements, Freedom to Marry has successfully refocused and redefined the national marriage equality debate; and
Whereas:
In a country where gay and lesbian couples are still denied basic partnership rights, we are truly fortunate to have an organization like Freedom to Marry leading the national fight against sex discrimination in marriage; it has distinguished itself in service to the community, and is worthy of the esteem, not only of the LGBT community, but of New Yorkers; now, therefore
Be It Known:
