(New York, January 15, 2008)—Marking the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of those who inspire our commitment to achieving full inclusion and equality for all, Freedom to Marry today announces the launch of a dynamic new website at www.freedomtomarry.org.
The newly reorganized and more user-friendly website is designed to serve the nationwide civil rights movement aimed at ending the exclusion of same-sex couples and their families from marriage. It also provides a starting point for all Americans seeking to learn more about the latest news on marriage equality, and contains an archive of tools to help people find their voice on why marriage matters, how the denial of marriage harms children and our country, and how to achieve fairness for all families.
"In 2008, as the freedom to marry continues to be the subject of debate and decision, we have the chance to help people push past their discomfort and continue moving toward inclusion," said Evan Wolfson, founder of Freedom to Marry and author of Why Marriage Matters: America, Equality, and Gay People's Right to Marry (Simon & Schuster 2004). "This website will speak to the non-gay people wrestling with the need for change, and the gay and non-gay people taking responsibility for talking to others about fairness."
The unveiling of the new website comes just weeks before the fast-approaching 11th annual Freedom to Marry Week, February 10-16, 2008. Every year, right around President Lincoln's Birthday and Valentine's Day, gay and non-gay people around the country gather to talk about our lives, our loves and our families, celebrate the victories from the year before and continue the fight for the freedom to marry. The new homepage offers an updated Resource Guide (pdf) to assist in planning events and talking about Freedom to Marry Week. It also highlights news and events as this year’s celebration approaches. Last year’s Freedom to Marry week resulted in hundreds of events across the country and this year we expect even more participation.
Freedom to Marry’s new website now features an inaugural piece from Evan Wolfson, who takes a moment to look back at last year’s accomplishments and describe the great possibilities of the year ahead. Wolfson says, “In 2008, it is due season for the redeeming of our country, for justice for all families, and for that all-important second state.”
