Eugene DuBoffEugene DuBoff, MD, is a Board Certified Psychiatrist and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He attended Dartmouth College, received his BA and MD degrees from the University of Michigan and completed his residency at the University Of Colorado Department of Psychiatry.

A retired military officer, he served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force and Colorado Air National Guard and as a psychiatrist in the Army Reserve.

Dr. DuBoff has over 30 years of experience in private psychiatric practice. He founded The Denver Center for Medical Research, an organization "dedicated to research and treatment." Through that organization, he has been involved, for the past 20 years, in conducting and managing clinical trials aimed at evaluating the safety and effectiveness of new medications in the areas of psychiatry and neurology.

He joined Freedom to Marry's steering committee in 2005 because he recognized growing areas of divisiveness and territoriality in our country. In spite of some gains, one of these areas has to do with the greater stigmatizing and marginalizing of the whole gay and transgender community.

"It is particularly evident in the attempts to exclude gays from becoming more fully incorporated into societal life by prohibiting recognition of their marriage," says Dr. Duboff. He continues, "Some of the most vicious language is aimed at these people and this issue. Further, it may be sometimes politically expedient to use this issue to divert and consolidate attention from other economic and political matters and to use the gay and marriage issue to 'protect' these other areas of concern."

Dr. DuBoff feels that marriage equality is an important step in the civil rights fight for gay and lesbian people. "All humans should be treated with equality in a way that does not marginalize or stigmatize them," he says. "This does not mean merely reluctantly granting privileges which are clearly intended to be of second class. By being thus inclusive, marriage equality promises to strengthen the bonds and traditions of marriage and not in any way diminish them. Ultimately, this contributes to stable families with two parents, a more stable society and a deepening foundation of family values."
