Support for the freedom to marry in New Jersey at record high

According to a Quinnipac University poll released today, 57% of New Jersey voters support the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.

Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) announced she is joining Freedom to Marry in urging the Democratic Party to include a freedom to marry plank in the 2012 Party Platform.

Today Maine’s Secretary of State, Charlie Summers, confirmed that marriage advocates have collected enough signatures to allow a ballot measure this November that, if passed, would extend the freedom to marry to gay and lesbian couples.

Today, Governor Chris Christie vetoed a freedom to marry bill that would make New Jersey the eighth state in the nation to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage, setting the stage for work to line up the votes needed to override the veto and make the bill law.

Today the New Jersey Assembly voted 42 to 33 to pass A. 1, the bill that would extend the freedom to marry to gay and lesbian couples in the Garden State. The Assembly vote follows a 24-16 vote passing a marriage bill in the state Senate earlier this week.
