After picking students up from train stations in New York City, they traveled to Albany to begin training. The leadership of the initiative assembled a host of seminars that would prepare the students for meetings with NY politicians, community leaders, and constituents. [Link]

The quest to obtain a marriage license started when he joined a lawsuit against the state that reached the Court of Appeals, which deferred the question to the Legislature. He considers the Assembly debate and passage a historic first step. "And as it turned out, many of my straight colleagues in the Assembly support my right to be as miserable as possible. My ability to get a marriage license hurts nobody: Gay marriage is less harmful to straight people than Dick Cheney on a hunting trip." [Link]

"I see [these questions] as an encouraging sign that the court is taking this important question of ending discrimination in marriage very seriously and thoughtfully," said Evan Wolfson. He said it is crucial that gay and lesbian Californians take action now "to create the climate in California that enables the court to do the right thing" in the marriage case.

A 48-year old Virginia man is battling the state Workers Compensation Commission for death benefits stemming from an accident that ultimately led to the death of his partner in 2005. "This case is about making sure that the rules are applied fairly to everyone," said Greg Nevins, a senior attorney with Lambda Legal which is representing Dunnavant. "Virginia law broadly gives anyone dependent on a deceased worker the right to claim benefits; there is no 'same-sex partner exception' to the rule." [link]

When Michigan voters passed the discriminator ban on gay and lesbian couples' marriages in 2004, they made a mistake. When Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox used his position to further his personal beliefs and ban same-sex benefits as well, he made the voters' mistake much worse. Now, the University is in a tough spot as it must mitigate these realities. Its attempts to deal with the dumb law and Cox's dumber interpretations are flawed. The only solution is that Michigan voters must abolish the nonsensical "gay marriage" ban. [link]

The U.S. Senate on Monday confirmed as a federal judge a woman who attended a same-sex commitment ceremony, overwhelmingly rejecting the concerns of a Republican senator running for the White House. The vote was 83-4 in favor of elevating Michigan state judge Janet Neff to federal district court. [Link]

"The key to changing hearts is getting people to hear from and about real people," he said, "rather than approach it in the hypothetical or with just scary rhetoric or abstractions. That's why getting gay and non-gay people to talk about why marriage matters for real couples and kids, reaching out to the people around us and asking them for their support is so crucial." [Link]
