Is there same-sex marriage in the U.S. outside of Massachusetts? Well, it depends what you mean by "sex," I suppose, when you take into account the difficulties that most states have in accepting the reality of variant gender identity. [Link]

Suze Orman discusses the financial inequality she faces because she and her partner are excluded from marriage: "[Marriage] matters a big deal financially. It's not right that somebody like me, who has millions of dollars, that upon my death, my significant other is going to have to lose 50 percent of that to estate taxes. Why should I be punished? Evan Wolfson said civil union advocates in Oregon did well to counter an anti-gay amendment with an assertive plan. "They boldly declared that they intend to get marriage, and intend to get there by way of what's available now, which is civil unions, and will not allow that to be a stopping point," he said.

Putting gay and lesbian couples' relationships in the political arena scarcely helps anyone. It gives grandstanding pols a chance to show off, but it's hard to argue that a little tolerance of differing views on the issue threatens the American family structure. It's even harder to make a case for an unnecessary constitutional amendment. [link]

"The conversation about how gay people are being unfairly treated has gotten much greater in the years, and people have understood how important it is to reach out to their neighbors and say, 'We're here, we're part of this community, and we want fair treatment for our families,'" he said.
