Dolores Huerta's speech at Pullman University touched on a variety of issues — including women's roles, racism, social injustice, immigration and marriage equality. "Once we know, we have to act on our knowledge. Nothing is going to change unless we change it." Huerta said, encouraging students to take attainable steps toward change, such as calling out people who use degrading terminology, organizing in groups to support causes, and writing letters to legislators.[link]

Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch's advisory opinion for the state to recognize gay and lesbian couples' marriages performed in Massachusetts and, further, to bring marriage equality there, is a step in the right direction for the Ocean State. [link]

All eyes now are on the highest courts in California, Connecticut and Maryland, where decisions on the constitutionality of marriage discrimination are likely this year. California and Connecticut are appeals that will test whether civil unions or domestic partnerships are legally inadequate substitutes for matrimony. [link]

Responding to a request for a legal opinion from the commissioner of the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education, Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch said the state prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation and did not explicitly prohibit same-sex marriage. "Rhode Island will recognize same-sex marriages lawfully performed in Massachusetts as marriages in Rhode Island," the seven-page opinion said. [link]

House Speaker Roy Cohee, R-Casper, cast the tie-breaking vote in committee Thursday to kill a bill that would have barred Wyoming from recognizing gay and lesbian marriages from other states. [link]

The Sixth Annual Freedom to Marry Reception was hosted Feb. 15 in Chicago. The free reception was sponsored by Lambda Legal, Merrill Lynch, and The Aragon Ballroom, and spotlighted efforts to support equal marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples. [Link]

China holds first Freedom to Marry Day protest

On Valentine's Day, Beijing's gay population protested for marriage equality. This was the Freedom to Marry Day event in China. In addition, many by-standers supported the protesters. "I think it's only fair; it's everybody's right to get married," Liu Peng, one of the crowd who watched the protest, told the Advocate. "I support them. I think it's great." [Link]
