The Tempe Officers Association and Tempe Firefighters Association have taken a stand against AZ's Proposition 107. The ballot question would prohibit gay & lesbian couples from marriage and bar governments from offering benefits and health insurance to unmarried couples both gay and non-gay. [Link]

Marriage equality is not the greatest threat to the heterosexual family. Misbehavior and irresponsibility by married heterosexuals do far more damage to families and children. Liberals should be unafraid to embrace the language of personal responsibility. In my experience, there's not a dime's worth of difference between my morally conservative friends and neighbors and me in our attitudes toward the obligations of parenthood. [Link]

Del. Robert Marshall, R-Manassas, and Evan Wolfson debated the issue of marriage equality, and more specifically the Marshall-Newman Amendment concerning same-sex marriage co-sponsored by Marshall. "I thought Wolfson did a better job with orating in the realm of the concrete," second-year College student Carianne King said. "Marshall really had trouble with coming up with stable examples and arguments."

Leaders and members of the lesbian and gay community said Thursday's ruling upholding California's ruling denying lesbian and gay couples the rights and responsibilities of marriage was a minor setback. "I think we win some and we lose some; there are good passages and bad passages," said Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry. "We've said all along that this struggle to end discrimination is going to be a patchwork in which we see some states move faster than others."

It wasn't until the 1990s that I learned my uncle had twice been sent to a sanitarium in his youth to be 'cured' of his homosexuality. When my uncle became bedridden for nearly a decade in his 80s after a series of strokes, his partner was at his bedside caring for him every day. "We could not stand idly by without taking a stand on this amendment," said Michael Byron, president of the Idaho Inclusiveness Coalition, in a prepared statement concerning the Idaho initiative to write marriage discrimination into the state constitution. "As an organization, we are charged with developing and implementing strategies for creating inclusive communities in Idaho. And as businesspeople, we are concerned about the effect passage of HJR2 would likely have on the business climate of our state. Opposing this amendment is the only logical choice for us." [Link]

Study: Marriage Equality Good for the Economy

Policymakers and businesspeople have not fully recognized the enormous potential gains to the economy from treating same-sex couples equally," M. V. Lee Badgett, the study's coauthor and research director of the Williams Institute, said in a statement. "Our study shows that equal treatment of couples in the business world attracts heterosexual employees and creates more productive workplaces for gay, lesbian, and bisexual employees." [Link]

For the past 30 years the church has performed weddings of gay and lesbian couples while supporting the rights of other churches to sanction marriage of their choice. "Civil marriage is different," said Khleber M. Van Zandt, pastor of the First Unitarian Church of Alton. "When a couple is married in the eyes of the state, they receive protections far beyond what those who are considered unmarried receive from our system of laws." [Link]
