Today, the United States Department of Justice announced that the federal government would respect the marriages of the 1,300+ same-sex couples in Utah who have been issued marriage licenses in the state since December 20, 2013.

The amendment, formerly known as HJR-6, is now titled HJR-3, and a hearing is scheduled in the House Judiciary Committee for Monday, January 13.

State officials in Utah announced today that state agencies will not respect the marriages of the more than 1,000 same-sex couples who have been granted marriage licenses in the state.

Today at a news conference, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez announced that she would oppose any proposed legislation for a constitutional amendment to restrict the freedom to marry to different-sex couples in New Mexico.

On January 6, 2013, the United States Supreme Court granted a request for a stay in the marriage ruling in Utah that established the freedom to marry across the state. The ruling will be stayed - meaning that same-sex couples in Utah will be temporarily unable to receive marriage licenses - pending the state's appeal to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

On Saturday, December 28, The Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico's largest newspaper, urged legislators to stop their efforts to overturn the Supreme Court's marriage ruling.
