Today, Freedom to Marry launched a new step forward in the campaign to amplify support for marriage among our nation's mayors and demonstrate support among elected officials in every state in the country, Light Up the Map. The new goal set for the program is reaching 500 mayors representing all 50 states.

Yesterday, Judge Richard Stearns issued a ruling in McLaughlin v. Hagel, deciding that the plaintiffs are entitled to judgement in their favor, meaning they should be entitled to the protections and benefits that all other families receive.

The New Mexico Supreme Court has announced that it has set a date for hearing about whether same-sex couples have the freedom to marry in New Mexico. The court will hear oral arguments in a case brought by the ACLU of New Mexico on behalf of six same-sex couples on October 23.

For months, Steven Hynes and Robert Smith have been eagerly waiting for their home state of Illinois to pass a bill extending the freedom to marry to same-sex couples. They were left waiting on the day that Steven passed away after battling terminal stage 3 Melanoma for nearly a year.

This afternoon in Honololu, Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie announced that on October 28 he will convene a special legislative session to pass a bill to extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples across the state.

Yesterday, Los Alamos County in New Mexico became the eighth county in the state to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and on Tuesday, Grant County became the seventh county to extend marriage protections to same-sex couples.

Today, the Obama Administration directed the executive branch to no longer enforce federal laws that prevented legally married same-sex couples from accessing veteran's benefits. The spouses of gay and lesbian military veterans will soon be eligible for many protections that straight spouses have.
