Department of Justice files request for Supreme Court to hear DOMA challenges

It's been a big week for judicial movement on the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. On Tuesday, the Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to hear two challenges to DOMA in order to settle them sooner rather than later, and on Wednesday, a district court judge denied the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group's request for a stay in a different case.

Last week, the Democratic Party in Kentucky's largest county approved a resolution to encourage the state's delegates to the national convention to support the addition of a "freedom to marry" plank in the official Democratic party platform. It's the latest move in the recent surge of traditionally conservative states growing their support for the freedom to marry.

These cupcakes may not be the official Freedom to Marry cupcake, but this simple display of rainbow baked goods and the Freedom to Marry logo was really significant for me. It represented how my family has become more open about discussing gay issues and how confidently my mother is willing to assert that her son is an advocate for marriage.

On Friday, Speaker of the House John Boehner announced that the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group will request the Supreme Court to review an appeals court decision in two recent lawsuits that ruled the so-called Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.
League of United Latin American Citizens passes freedom to marry resolution

House Speaker says Rhode Island will vote on marriage in 2013
