Yesterday, former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel, who has been nominated to become Secretary of Defense in the Obama administration, sent a letter to Senator Barbara Boxer, where he affirmed his support for same-sex military couples and their families.

Last week, the Obama administration announced support for a bill in Rhode Island that would extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples across the state. President Obama announced similar support for marriage legislation in his home state of Illinois last month.

On Sunday, dozens of business leaders signed onto a letter endorsing the freedom to marry in Illinois, explaining that ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage would strengthen the workforce and increase economic development across the state.

A new poll from Political Insiders in The National Journal indicates significant growth in support of ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage. 97 percent of Democratic respondents and 27 percent of Republican respondents said that their respective parties should support the freedom to marry.

Yesterday was the first day of the 2013 legislative session in Illinois, and IL state Sen. Heather Steans and Rep. Greg Harris wasted no time introducing bills to extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples in the state. Illinois Unites for Marriage, which includes Freedom to Marry, is working alongside legislators to pass the bill in 2013.

For the past week, the Campaign for Southern Equality has been touring across the South with its "We Do" campaign, where same-sex couples request marriage licenses and provoke denials in order to illustrate the discriminatory marriage laws in these states. Just over ten years ago, in November 2003, Margaret H. Marshall, the chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, penned a decision in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health. Now, some language from the decision is becoming a popular selection for readings at weddings.

Yesterday, the Washington National Cathedral announced that it will soon begin hosting weddings for same-sex couples. The historic church is one of the first Episcopal congregations in the country to introduce marriage rites for LGBT individuals.
