For Jo and Teresa, who have been together for 29 years, the freedom to marry in Maryland really does matter. Beyond the necessary protections that marriage would provide, they know that Maryland is their home. "It's significant that our children were born here," Teresa said. "It's significant that this is where we've made our home. We are part of this community and we want to be treated equally here."

Mainers United for Marriage, the coalition working to proactively pass the freedom to marry at the ballot in Maine, released a new advertisement that explains that ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage in Maine would in no way lead to more discrimination lawsuits in the state.

In November, Marylanders will be asked to uphold the freedom to marry, for all loving and committed couples, a law that was signed by the governor in March. Bobbi and Jen Buchman, who married in a "non-legal" ceremony in Maryland in November 2011, are one of the couples who will be affected by the vote. Today is Spirit Day, an annual day when millions of Americans wear purple as a symbol of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans people across the country.
