Today, the Rhode Island Senate approved S38, the bill that will extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples throughout the state of Rhode Island. It's a landmark moment for marriage nationwide and for thousands of loving, committed couples in Rhode Island.

Twenty years ago, Justice Steven Levinson and the Hawaii Supreme Court made history. They became the first appellate court in global history to find that a state constitution presumptively prohibited the exclusion of same-sex couples from access to marriage. As the anniversary of the ruling he authored approaches, Justice Steven Levinson reflects on the ruling and looks ahead to the future of the freedom to marry.

This week, a number of new mayors joined the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry coalition - including Mayor Lioneld Jordan from Fayetteville, AR and Mayor Barb Shirley from Salina, KS.

Today, the House of Representatives in Delaware voted in favor of HB75, the bill that would extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples across the state of Delaware!

Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee in Rhode Island voted in favor of S38, the bill that would extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples in Rhode Island. By a vote of 7-4, the committee members advanced the marriage bill to the full Senate floor and voted against a discriminatory referendum bill that sought to send the freedom to marry to the ballot.

Today, the French National Assembly finalized the passage of the freedom to marry! By a final vote of 331-225, the French General Assembly passed legislation to extend the freedom to marry and the ability to adopt to same-sex couples.

Today, on the day that the Senate Judiciary Committee in Rhode Island will vote on legislation that would extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples, all of the members of the Senate Republican Caucus in Rhode Island announced their support for the marriage bill. The caucus is now the first legislative caucus of any political party in any state to unanimously support the freedom to marry.

Last night, Tuesday, April 22, the Nevada Senate voted in favor of a resolution that would begin the process of winning the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Nevada.
