Freedom to Marry's federal program continues making progress on overturning the Defense of Marriage Act through the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act. We have seen immense support for the bill, with 151 House co-sponsors, 32 Senate co-sponsors, and 74 organizations signing on as Respect for Marriage Coalition members.

House introduces bill to protect married gay and lesbian service members

This afternoon, U.S. Representative Adam Smith, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, introduced a bill in the House of Representatives that would explicitly clarify the definition of "spouse" to include same-sex couples.

National Council of La Raza passes freedom to marry resolution

Earlier this month, the board of the National Council of La Raza unanimously approved a resolution supporting the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. NCLR is the largest Latino civil rights group in the country.
