We're not even a full month into 2013, and yet the freedom to marry is off to an amazing start this year, with five key states looking to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage. Each of the legislative campaigns - in Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, and Rhode Island - have significant momentum this year to move marriage forward.

Today, the House of Representatives in Rhode Island voted on a bill that would extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples - and by a vote of 51 to 19, the members of the House approved the bill!

On Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee in Colorado voted to advance a bill that would allow same-sex couples in the state to join together in civil union, which affords same-sex couples some - but not all - of the protections and responsibilities that marriage provides.

Today, the Judiciary Committee of the Rhode Island House of Representatives unanimously voted to advance a bill that would extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples in the state. This vote marks the first time ever that a legislative body has moved a marriage bill forward in the state.
