As an active member of the armed forces, Jenn Veryzer fought to help end the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy that prohibited gay men and lesbians from serving openly, and she kept her relationship secret. Today, she hopes to become an advocate for marriage and protect her new family.

Today Freedom to Marry announced that Sergio Lopez, a seasoned campaign organizer, Latino media strategist, and marriage advocate has joined as the newest member of its team, and will serve as director of Latino programming.

By the time Jamelle Thomas and Karane Williams met for their first date, they felt like they had already known each other forever. They hit it off as soon as they first met and married in October 2012, but the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) creates struggles for them every day.

Voters in Minnesotan have voted AGAINST a proposed constitutional amendment that would have permanently limited the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. This win, taken with wins in Maine and Maryland, makes tonight a historic day for the campaign to win marriage nationwide.

Tonight, the Vote For 6 campaign won, extending the freedom to marry to all loving and committed same-sex couples! Maryland is now the eighth state in the United States to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from Maryland!

Some people are intimidated by the concept of phone banking because they think they're not good on the phone or don't feel comfortable making calls about marriage. I was nervous the first time I phone banked, too. But it's easy, it costs nothing, and it makes the biggest difference this year by reaching our most critical group.

Working to win marriage every day from Freedom to Marry's New York City office has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but there's nothing like being on the front lines of a state campaign. Two weeks ago, with a historic election looming and several vacation days to use up before the end of the year, I took a Volunteer Vacation through United for Marriage and traded in my communications hat for a stab at field organizing.

Jessica and Gemma's happiness has been interrupted by the Defense of Marriage Act, which prevents legally married same-sex couples from obtaining permanent U.S. residency for a spouse from another country. Because Gemma is from the United Kingdom, the harms of DOMA immediately hit the couple hard. "Every day we were together felt like it was interrupted by a ticking time bomb. Every day, there was that fear of losing each other. It took a huge emotional toll on us and made everything ten times harder," Jessica said.
