UPDATED 7:00pm: This evening, President Barack Obama and the Department of Justice filed an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in 'Hollingsworth v. Perry,' urging that Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that anti-gay activists succeeded in pushing through in November 2008 to strip same-sex couples of the freedom to marry in California in 2008, should be oveturned.

When Juka Mendes moved to the US on a student visa, he never expected to fall in love. But he did, and got married to Air Force member Jonathan Malumay. Now, Juka can no longer afford his education, and in April his visa expires. As a service member, Jonathan is eligible for an education grant that he should be able to transfer to his husband, but because DOMA does not respect his marriage, he cannot do so.
AFER attorneys file briefs asking Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8

Today, the attorneys for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, AFER, filed a brief in their Hollingsworth v. Perry case asking the United States Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8 and restore the freedom to marry in California.

The U.S. Supreme Court has announced that it will hear the Proposition 8 case in the 2013 session. One of the best ways to make the case to the Court is by sharing stories of happy same-sex couples. Eleven couples decided to do just that by sharing their stories with Freedom to Marry. Meet them!
