Civil Union law takes effect in Colorado

Early this morning, May 1, a law that creates civil union for same-sex couples took effect in Colorado. As we celebrate the civil union law taking effect in Colorado, we also look forward to a day when same-sex couples can see their state stand up for their love, their commitment, and their families by extending the full freedom to marry.

Today, the Colorado House of Representatives approved a law that will extend civil union to same-sex couples in the state, marking a huge step toward the freedom to marry in the state. The law now awaits Gov. John Hickenlooper's signature, who has been a vocal advocate for the law.

Today, the Colorado Senate approved a bill that would all same-sex couples to join together in civil union, which affords same-sex couples some - but not all - of the protections and responsibilities that marriage provides. Now, the bill will be considered by the CO House of Representatives.

This morning, the Colorado Senate Appropriations Committee voted to advance a bill that would allow same-sex couples in the state to join together in civil union. Last week, the bill was advanced through the Senate Judiciary Committee. Now, it will be heard and voted on by the full Colorado Senate.
Wyoming House Committee advances domestic partnership bill

Today, the Wyoming House Corporations Committee advanced a bill that would allow same-sex couples to join together in domestic partnerships. We applaud the members of the Wyoming House Corporations Committee for taking that first step, but we know that the freedom to marry is the only way to achieve true equality.

In first year of civil union law, Delaware issued over 500 licenses to same-sex couples

Just over a year ago - on January 1, 2012 - the Civil Union and Equality Act of 2011 took effect in Delaware. This week, Delaware reporters found that the state's three marriage bureaus have so far issued approximately 565 civil union licenses since the law took effect.

Nearly a full year ago, on January 1, 2012, a civil union law went into effect in the state of Hawaii, allowing same-sex couples to apply for and receive civil unions. This week, the Hawaii Department of Heatlh announced that 719 same-sex couples have joined together in civil union this year.
Sponsors of marriage bill in Illinois aim for a January vote

Yesterday, two Illinois state legislators said that they will be working hard in the next month to pass the freedom to marry in Illinois. In three weeks, the General Assembly reconvenes, and two lawmakers responsible for sponsoring a freedom to marry bill have said they will push for the approval of the bill soon after the legislative session resumes.
Delaware governor looks toward the freedom to marry in the state

Following up on his statement from March that a law granting same-sex couples the freedom to marry in Delaware is "inevitable," Gov. Jack Markell said that the state legislature in Delaware would likely be taking up the issue soon - "probably within the next few years."
