Jim and Pat hope that they will be able to marry, legally, in Illinois soon. Until then, Jim plans to continue his advocacy work in Illinois, including sharing his story with elected officials to show why marriage matters to him and Pat.

One of the excited marriage supporters in New Jersey is David DelVecchio, Mayor of Lambertville, NJ. He said that if there is not a stay on the ruling, which declares that marriages for same-sex couples should begin on October 21, 2013, he wants to perform the first marriage for a same-sex couple

The judge ruled in favor of the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in New Jersey, and unless the decision is appealed, marriages would begin in the state on October 21, 2013. Now that the lower court has found that the New Jersey civil union law is unconstitutional, it is imperative that the New Jersey legislature act quickly to pass a marriage bill.

Nikki and Sue had a beautiful ceremony promising commitment to each other in Hawaii - but it was frustrating to see that no matter how gorgeous their day was, their commitment is not legally respected by the state of Hawaii. And when they returned home to New Jersey, too, they knew that they would continue to be viewed as single.

For months, Steven Hynes and Robert Smith have been eagerly waiting for their home state of Illinois to pass a bill extending the freedom to marry to same-sex couples. They were left waiting on the day that Steven passed away after battling terminal stage 3 Melanoma for nearly a year.

But even though Chris and Will legally married in California and now share in all the federal protections of marriage, they know that their relationship is still not granted legal respect in Hawaii, where they live now.

A new poll released today finds that 60 percent of New Jersey residents support the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. That's on par with many recent polls in the state, which demonstrate consistently that it's time for marriage in New Jersey.

Early this morning, May 1, a law that creates civil union for same-sex couples took effect in Colorado. As we celebrate the civil union law taking effect in Colorado, we also look forward to a day when same-sex couples can see their state stand up for their love, their commitment, and their families by extending the full freedom to marry.

Today, the Colorado House of Representatives approved a law that will extend civil union to same-sex couples in the state, marking a huge step toward the freedom to marry in the state. The law now awaits Gov. John Hickenlooper's signature, who has been a vocal advocate for the law.
