Former Chicago Inspector General David Hoffman, who recently announced his intention to run in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary in February, recently issued a statement to the Chicago Tribune supporting marriage equality, the Respect for Marriage Act, and the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Republicans in the Senate have been holding up confirmation of President Obama's highly-qualified appointee to head the agency, Professor Robert M. Groves. In addition, the Bush Administration starved the Census Bureau in its appropriations. State legislatures need to get down to work in time to assure that the next federal elections can be conducted in a timely manner, and that the allocation of electoral votes for the 2012 presidential election properly reflects the country's population. Steve Schmidt, a key architect of John McCain's presidential campaign, is making his first public return to Washington a bold one. Schmidt will use a speech Friday to Log Cabin Republicans to urge conservative Republicans to drop their opposition to the freedom to marry for gay and lesbian couples, CNN has learned. [Link]

Stung by the victory of Proposition 8, gay rights activists are taking a lesson from the Obama campaign: community-organizing boot camps. They are recasting their message to emphasize personal narratives. Publicly, at least, the measure's opponents are optimistic they'll prevail in the court challenge led by Equality California that's now before the California Supreme Court. But the boot camps – called Camp Courage – are designed to lay the groundwork for a ballot fight as early as 2010 to overturn the marriage ban. (Link)
