Elected officials who are Catholic are stepping up to support marriage equality—often despite heavy-handed tactics by the Catholic hierarchy.
Political figures know that Catholics in the electorate continue to grow in their acceptance of marriage equality for LGBT people.

California state officials recently sworn into office include: Attorney General, Kamala Harris, Governor Jerry Brown, Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Victoria Kolakowski, and Betty Yee, a member of the California Board of Equalization. The newly-elected governor of Rhode Island has used his first speech to urge the legalization of the freedom to marry:
"When marriage equality is the law in Rhode Island, we honor our forefathers who risked their lives and fortune in the pursuit of human equality. Rhode Island today must be as welcoming to all as [founder] Roger Williams intended it to be. Mark my words, these two actions will do more for economic growth in our state than any economic development loan."
