There is no one formulation for what makes a strong family, and there is no magic blueprint for what makes a good mother: The one thing that strong, dynamic families have in common is love.

This week, two members of the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. David Scott (D-GA) and Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) announced their support for the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.

For the past week, the Campaign for Southern Equality has been touring across the South with its "We Do" campaign, where same-sex couples request marriage licenses and provoke denials in order to illustrate the discriminatory marriage laws in these states. Today, Kasim Reed, mayor of Atlanta, Georgia, signed onto our Mayors for the Freedom to Marry coalition, which amplifies the voices of mayors across the country who support ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage. The mayor's announcement today comes less than a week after the Atlanta City Council overwhelmingly passed a resolution in favor of the freedom to marry.

Our friends at Georgia Equality have put together an incredible video series telling the stories of real families in Atlanta who have been harmed by marriage discrimination. Many of the folks featured in these videos are well known members of the community who have devoted their lives to making Atlanta a better place. Freedom to Marry's Summer for Marriage Tour wraps up next week with events in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. The tour, which was originally organized in response to the National Organization for Marriage's anti-gay “One Man, One Woman” bus tour, has highlighted widespread support for the freedom to marry with supporters of equality outnumbering NOM’s supporters on all 16 stops thus far

Cynthia Tucker is an American syndicated columnist. She was recognized with a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2007 "for her courageous, clear-headed columns that evince a strong sense of morality and persuasive knowledge of the community". She was a Pulitzer-nominated finalist in 2004 and 2006.
On June 20, 2010, in reaction to David Blankenhorn's testimony at the Prop 8 trial in California, Ms. Tucker wrote in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "There are no good arguments for denying gays and lesbians the right to a civil (non-religious) marriage. But of all the arguments that opponents make, perhaps the most ridiculous is this: If gays are allowed to marry, heterosexual marriage will be weakened."
