ACT wants resolution to gay stand-off

The ACT government has told a gay-rights rally it expects a disagreement with the commonwealth over its plan to allow same-sex civil unions to be resolved by the end of March, but neither side are giving any ground. The ACT also used the rally to announce plans to give gay couples equal access to parental leave. [Link]

Well, what a great notice that came through on my listserv last night! New York Appellate Court rules that out out of state marriages must be recognized! Woo HOO! Yay for all NY couples who married in Massachusetts, or Canada - and yay for ME ! I got married in Canada last September! And we live in New York! But...wait a minute. El Senado acaba de aprobar una resolución para prohibir constitucionalmente el matrimonio entre parejas del mismo sexo. De ello lograrse, Puerto Rico quedará rezagado comparado con otros países desarrollados que permiten las uniones homosexuales y hasta el matrimonio gay. Hasta en España, de donde proviene gran parte del derecho puertorriqueño, se les permite a las parejas homosexuales casarse. [Link]

As a gay man who has been partnered for 19 years, married in Canada in 2005 and parent of a 2-year-old, I can tell you that we are not attacking Catholics or marriage. We don't want anything more than what all other committed couples have: the tax, health, pension, visitation and death protections that are a part of marriage. These are not special rights. They are protections offered by the government, not the Catholic Church. [link]

Green Party justice spokesman Ciarán Cuffe said the Government proposal would give cohabiting gay and lesbian couples, who register their relationship with a new agency, the same rights under the law as heterosexual couples. Sweden's three opposition parties, the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Left Party have put forward a motion in the Swedish Parliament to allow gay couples to legally marry. There is wide support in the parliament for the move, with the only party against the plans the Christian Democrats. [Link]
