Today, the House of Representatives in Rhode Island voted on a bill that would extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples - and by a vote of 51 to 19, the members of the House approved the bill!

Today, the Judiciary Committee of the Rhode Island House of Representatives unanimously voted to advance a bill that would extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples in the state. This vote marks the first time ever that a legislative body has moved a marriage bill forward in the state.

Yesterday was the first day of the 2013 legislative session in Illinois, and IL state Sen. Heather Steans and Rep. Greg Harris wasted no time introducing bills to extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples in the state. Illinois Unites for Marriage, which includes Freedom to Marry, is working alongside legislators to pass the bill in 2013.

Today, Congressman Richard Hanna (R-NY) announced his support for the Respect for Marriage Act, bill HR-1116, which would repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. Congressman Hanna is the 159th cosponsor of the bill and the second Republican cosponsor.
