The Maine Senate on Thursday gave initial approval to legislation that would permit same-sex couples to marry. The Senate voted 21-14 to approve the measure (gaining a vote from the first reading), following an emotional debate. An attempt by conservatives to put the issue before voters was soundly defeated. The measure now moves to the House. [Link]

Nora Ranney writes, "After a successful joint Judiciary Committee vote this week, the Marriage Equality bill (LD 1020) goes to the Senate floor for a vote TODAY. The Senate consists of 20 Democrats and 15 Republicans, with a simple majority needed to pass…so the magic number is 18." [Link]
Maine committee approves marriage bill

The Legislature's Judiciary Committee voted 11-2-1 today in support of a bill to allow gay couples to marrt in Maine. Eleven members voted in favor of the bill, two voted against it, and one voted to send it to referendum. The bill will now move forward to the full Senate for consideration. [Link]

Supporters of marriage equality in Maine delivered 10,000 post cards on Monday to the office of Baldacci, who remains undecided on the issue. In a State House news conference, they also talked about their legislative lobbying efforts a day before the Judiciary Committee again takes up an issue that drew thousands to a hearing in Augusta last week. Same-sex couples from around the state urged lawmakers to pass a bill that would allow them to marry in Maine while opponents asked that it be rejected. About 3,000 people filed into the Augusta Civic Center for the daylong hearing on LD 1020 held Wednesday before the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee. Supporters, many of whom were dressed in red, outnumbered opponents more than 4-to-1. (Link)
Mainers Air Their Views on Marriage Equality

Maine became the latest New England state to take up the issue of marriage equality Wednesday, when thousands of Mainers emotionally told lawmakers why the state should allow it. About 4,000 people packed into the Augusta Civic Center, snarling traffic throughout the capital city, for a daylong public hearing. “The bill is fair; this bill’s time has come,” said Senator Dennis S. Damon, a Democrat who is the bill’s sponsor. “It recognizes the worth and dignity of every man and every woman among us.” (Link)

Nora Ranney, ACLU's LGBT Project Legislative & Field Director, shares her experience of attending the public hearing in Maine for their marriage equality bill: "Our side has come out in droves. I can’t estimate the number of people, but the civic center is 90 percent full, with LOTS of red. I would say there are about 25 marriage supporters to every opponent." (Link)
