Today, Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) became the 44th United States Senator to co-sponsor the Respect for Marriage Act (S. 1236), the bill that would fully repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, definitively ending federal marriage discrimination and ensuring certainty regardless of where a legally married same-sex couple lives.

Last week, the Montana Democratic Party approved a freedom to marry plank in the official party platform. Now, MT Senator Max Baucus, who voted to approve the so-called Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, is applauding the decision.

Republican State Senator John Brueggeman of Polson is taking a stand on LGBT rights, and is proposing a bill which would strike language from Montana law which prohibits homosexuality.

The ACLU on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Montana on behalf of several same-sex couples. The couples say the state denies them the same protections straight married couples receive in health care, end-of-life decision-making and inheritance.
