Pro-marriage equality state senator Bill Baroni is a Central Jersey GOPer from a Democratic leaning district. But the guy is no Republican-In-Name-Only, nor the kind who has everyone wondering, 'Why doesn't he just switch parties already?' In fact, he's one of the brightest Republican stars on the state horizon. It sometimes takes a person with an iron will to lead elected officials past a superficial political posture to do what they know is right and true. [Link]

New Jersey state Sen. President Richard Codey has scheduled a vote on marriage equality for Thursday. Codey said Tuesday that the people of New Jersey ''deserve the right to a formal debate on the Senate floor.'' [Link]

The New Jersey State Senate has just announced it is voting this Thursday, January 7, 2010 on the marriage equality bill. We need each of you to join us for this most momentus day in our lives. We ask you to meet us in front of the State House in Trenton Thursday at 10:30 am, when we will march from the State House to the State House Annex, and then talk to legislators before the vote. You may meet us in front of the State House earlier than 10:30 am Thursday to help us organize. We will be there earlier whenever you arrive.
The address of the State House, for GPS and purposes, is 125 West State Street. Park at the Marriott garage, 1 West Lafayette Street.
Thursday afternoon, immediately after the Senate vote, Garden State Equality will hold a news conference and a free member reception at the Trenton Marriott Ballroom, 1 West Lafayette Street. [Link]

There will in fact be a vote on marriage equality in the lame duck session of the New Jersey state legislature on Thursday. "We're gonna post the bill and see what happens," says Senate President Dick Codey. If the bill does pass in the Senate, it would go to the Assembly which would also have to debate, and then hold a final vote on Monday. [Link] Support NJ equality here.

With just two weeks before New Jersey changes governors, LGBT advocates face challenges in getting a marriage equality law passed. Although Garden State Equality still remains hopeful that the bill can pass, more than 150 demonstrators on the State House steps Monday afternoon were resolved that Democratic legislators who pledged to pass the bill would be held accountable if they reneged on their promises. Clergy from 19 different faith groups around the state are asking Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex) and Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts (D-Camden) to vote on same-sex marriage legislation before the current legislative session ends. In a letter addressed to the leaders of the two houses, 120 clergy members said the current marriage law favors a religious viewpoint of traditional marriage over their beliefs, which support marriage equality. On Thursday, the New Jersey marriage equality bill's sponsors in the senate, Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen) and Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D-Union), said they asked Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex) to hold a vote on Jan. 7. The NJ Assembly has said it won't vote on a marriage equality bill until the Senate does. Jan. 7 is thought to be the last possible day the State Senate could consider the bill and still get it over to the Assembly in time for it to act. [Link]

Despite the fact that civil union dissolution proceedings are supposed to be the same as divorce under New Jersey law, gay and lesbian couples face a great deal of confusion and uncertainty when dissolving a civil union. The way it plays out in real life makes civil unions unequal both in establishing legally committed relationships and ending them. [Link]

A bill that would legalize the freedom to marry in New Jersey isn't technically dead. Advocates of marriage equality are pushing lawmakers to adopt the law before Republican Chris Christie becomes governor. He says he'd veto it. The current governor, Democrat Jon Corzine, says he'd sign it if lawmakers can get it to his desk in time.
