To believe otherwise is unthinkable to us," Dyszlewski said. "To believe otherwise is to imagine that in creating diversity in nature God made a mistake. Week intended to highlight inequality faced by gays

Freedom to Marry Week was established 10 years ago. Each February, we remind our fellow citizens of the fundamental unfairness of marriage inequality and try to win their support. We hope to reach the "reachables" — straight folks who allow themselves to be educated and can ignore religious and social prejudices — by telling our stories. This is mine:

The state's Senate passed legislation Wednesday that would ban Wyoming, which calls itself "The Equality State," from recognizing gay and lesbian couples' marriages performed in other states or countries where they are legal. [link]

Debi Hartmann is working with gay activists and Democratic leaders in Hawaii to enact civil unions. The move represents a stark change for Hartmann, who once led Hawaii's Future Today, a conservative group of Mormons, Catholics and others who opposed gay unions. "Real people live real lives," she said. "We need to realize that our neighbors are our friends, and they are being left out of a whole social process that we have taken for granted." [Link]

Before you vote on this referendum item, please first ask yourself: "What if a child of mine, a sibling or another loved were to follow the unique, intrinsic compass with which each of us is born, and enter into a same-sex relationship with a partner for whom they care deeply?" Who among us has the right to judge such a person, much less reject them or discriminate against them? [link]

It's embarrassing to remember how I wanted gays to just keep "it" to themselves. I wasn't a bad person for having these thoughts. I just never thought about it from any other perspective than my own. But from an American viewpoint, my old perspective was wrong. [Link]

Jeffrey Nielsen believes gay people should be allowed to marry and have children more now than he did in June when the stance cost him his job at Brigham Young University. Nielsen said he didn't know any gay men or women when he wrote an opinion piece that appeared June 4 in a Salt Lake newspaper that opposed the anti-gay-marriage position of LDS Church leadership, but now he knows hundreds.
