After last Friday's amazing victory in Michigan - which resulted in several hours of the freedom to marry in some Michigan counties on Saturday - it's a good time to check in on the state of marriage litigation across the country.

On Monday, December 23, federal judge Timothy Black issued a ruling declaring that the state of Ohio must respect marriages between same-sex couples on death certificates issued by the state.

Yesterday morning, John Arthur, the man from Ohio whose lawsuit with his partner, Jim Obergefell, challenged Ohio laws that restrict the freedom to marry to different-sex couples, passed away in Cincinnati. We wish our deepest condolences to his loved ones.

Today, U.S. District Judge Timothy Black ordered the State of Ohio to respect the marriage of a couple who wed this summer in Delaware. The ruling marks the second married same-sex couple to see their out-of-state marriage respected in Ohio in rulings ordered by Judge Black.
