Following an action filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and nine Alaska couples, the high court ruled that denying gay and lesbian couples rights extended to married couples deprives them of equal protection guaranteed under the Alaska Constitution. As drafted, benefits for same-sex couples would require the partners to swear they have been in "exclusive, committed and intimate relationships" for at least a year. (Link)

Wisconsin couple Richard Taylor and Ray Vahey were coming up on 50 years together when Taylor died in July. In their last year together they decided to finally come out to family and friends and joined a very public fight against a constitutional marriage exclusion amendment. [link]

Jeffrey Nielsen believes gay people should be allowed to marry and have children more now than he did in June when the stance cost him his job at Brigham Young University. Nielsen said he didn't know any gay men or women when he wrote an opinion piece that appeared June 4 in a Salt Lake newspaper that opposed the anti-gay-marriage position of LDS Church leadership, but now he knows hundreds. Attorneys who lost an appeal of Nebraska's broad ban on any recognition of same-sex relationships, called "the most extreme antigay family law in the nation," say they are still considering whether to appeal the case to the US Supreme Court. [link]

Saying that Proposal 2 "adds discrimination to our State Constitution," the party has called for its repeal. In addition, as it did in 2004, the party's platform calls for a number of other progressive actions, including recognizing the adoption rights of same-sex couples. [Link]

State CFO Tom Gallagher was soundly defeated in his race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination after positioning himself almost exactly the same as President Bush. Gallagher's abandonment of his previously more moderate stances on social issues for far-right positions — including opposing the freedom to marry and equal adoption rights for lesbian and gay couples — was seen as instrumental to his loss.
