Today, Maine’s Secretary of State approved the language for the citizen’s initiative asking Mainers to restore the freedom to marry in the state. Now that the language has been approved, EqualityMaine will begin collecting signatures to add that initiative to the ballot in 2012.

As a constitutional amendment banning marriage between same-sex couples is being considered by the North Carolina State Legislature next month, North Carolinians are standing up for the freedom to marry.

Freedom to Marry has joined Empire State Pride Agenda, Human Rights Campaign, and Marriage Equality New York to formed New Yorkers United for Marriage, a coalition who’s goal is goal of enacting a bill before the end of the current legislative session.

The House Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to hold on to a pair bills aiming to take away the freedom to marry in the state, avoiding a repeal that would be would be hugely unpopular with the public.

A handful of Senate Democrats who would be the deciding votes on an amendment to ban marriage equality said Tuesday they won't join minority Republicans to force a vote this year.
Barring a change of heart, that means the effort to allow a public vote on a constitutional amendment to ban the freedom to marry is dead in the Iowa Legislature this session.
