This September my civil union partner and I will celebrate 32 years of our long-term commitment. It would be so much easier to proclaim that we are a married couple, and more understandable, especially to those who live outside of Vermont and the United States. Try traveling to a state that does not recognize civil unions, which is 47 states in the United States. If you think civil unions are good enough, ask a gay friend or family member. [link]

Paul Thomasson and his partner, Paul Phelps, took time Friday to get their registration form notarized and plan to register by mail. Thomasson's parents asked if they could hold a reception after their son and Phelps registered as domestic partners. Phelps declined, saying the process was a "half-step" of legal rights. "You would not celebrate after visiting your attorney and executing a living will and deciding what (your partner) will do after you die, as callous as it sounds," Phelps said. [link]

The quest to obtain a marriage license started when he joined a lawsuit against the state that reached the Court of Appeals, which deferred the question to the Legislature. He considers the Assembly debate and passage a historic first step. "And as it turned out, many of my straight colleagues in the Assembly support my right to be as miserable as possible. My ability to get a marriage license hurts nobody: Gay marriage is less harmful to straight people than Dick Cheney on a hunting trip." [Link]

A 48-year old Virginia man is battling the state Workers Compensation Commission for death benefits stemming from an accident that ultimately led to the death of his partner in 2005. "This case is about making sure that the rules are applied fairly to everyone," said Greg Nevins, a senior attorney with Lambda Legal which is representing Dunnavant. "Virginia law broadly gives anyone dependent on a deceased worker the right to claim benefits; there is no 'same-sex partner exception' to the rule." [link]

As a same-sex couple, we cannot marry in California, and if we married elsewhere, California would refuse to recognize that marriage. Instead, we have that better-than-nothing, twilight-zone status conferred by California's domestic partner legislation. This legislation gives us many of the same rights and benefits as married couples, but the two statuses have different procedural protections, social meanings and legal effects. [Link]

Edith Windsor keeps working the phones. But this spring, she and Spyer decided that Thea couldn't wait any longer. With the help of three of Spyer's home care attendants, the couple flew to Toronto on Memorial Day weekend. The judge who married them, Windsor told the Toronto Globe and Mail, said that "we had married for all the people who died before same-sex weddings were possible." [Link]

As the debate ended, Assemblyman Matthew J. Titone, a Staten Island Democrat who is also gay, held up his cellphone and announced that his partner had just proposed. "Now everyone's asking, 'So when's the wedding?'" Mr. Titone said yesterday, "and my response is, 'We'll have to ask Joe Bruno when it will be.'" [Link]

In Massachusetts, as in Vermont, supporters of marriage equality gained ground when they put a human face on their cause. Gay and lesbian residents told stories about the relationships that mattered to them, about family, loyalty, commitment.
