Change in passport language is boon to gay rights activists

Riding the momentum from the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell," and the State Department's adoption of more gender-neutral language on passport applications, gay rights activists are pressing for more changes to federal policies that are unfavorable for the LGBT community.
Marriage equality isn’t revolutionary. It’s just the next step in marriage’s evolution.

No more "Mother" and "Father" for the Obama administration's State Department.
The department has announced that it is replacing the traditional parental designations on its passport applications (see above) with the more contemporaneously correct "Parent One" and "Parent Two."

Without repeal of the Defense of Marriage act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman under federal law, or the passage of the Domestic Partners and Obligations Act, which extends benefits to partners of gay federal employees, the spouses of gay and lesbian troops are ineligible for military benefits.

Minutes after the Senate voted to allow gays to serve openly in the military, Mary Lou Paquette said she felt a weight had been lifted.
Sean Eldridge, the political director of the national Freedom to Marry campaign, likened the ban on serving openly to laws that prohibit marriage for same-sex couples and called military discrimination "one of the cruelest inequalities inflicted on gay Americans by their own government" in a statement released in support of the bill's passage.
