Proponents clearly believe that, in order to win, they must underplay the significance of their measure. That's why they went to court this week in an attempt to block a revised ballot title of Proposition 8, rewritten by Attorney General Jerry Brown to reflect the state Supreme Court's May ruling that said marriage laws cannot apply unequally to same-sex and opposite-sex couples. Political analysts on both sides suggest that the language change will make passage of the initiative more difficult, noting that voters might be more reluctant to pass a measure that makes clear it is taking away existing rights. [Link]

The outside money is arriving in supersized chunks. Focus on the Family, a Colorado Springs group headed by James Dobson, has given more than $400,000 to the Prop. 8 campaign. The American Family Association, out of Tupelo, Miss., has contributed $500,000. The Knights of Columbus, a national Catholic men's organization headquartered in New Haven, Conn., has put $250,000 into the campaign. [Link]

Last week, the California Attorney General's office announced changes to the Proposition 8 ballot language which appropriately identifies the discrimination it promotes:
Take action now to preserve the freedom to marry in California by talking to your friends and family about how Prop. 8 takes away rights and why its important that fair-minded Californians vote no on Prop. 8 in November.

A resolution from the California Labor Federation said the group will "put forth energy and resources to educate and mobilize its members to vote against Proposition 8, and encourage its twenty-three member Central Labor Councils to do the same." [Link]

According to some polls, changing the language to denote the removal of rights can add up to ten points to the "no" votes. Also, the addition of fiscal impact could sway many voters in California who have seen the financial windfall marriage equality has given the state. [Link]
