Opponents of freedom to marry file suit to allow unlimited campaign spending in Rhode Island

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) is seeking to head off the legalization of the freedom to marry in Rhode Island by seeking the right to spend thousands of dollars on TV and radio ads for and against candidates for governor and the General Assembly, free from the state’s contribution limits and “extensive reporting requirements.”

It's only been two months since the District of Columbia legalized the freedom to marry, but local attorney Lawrence Jacobs is already cautioning his clients: Marriage may be allowed, but divorce will be much harder to do.
While the District and five states have legalized marriage equality and consequently allow divorces, granting divorces to same-sex couples elsewhere is often murky. As married same-sex couples cross into states that explicitly ban or don't recognize the freedom to marry, they face a dilemma.

Three major candidates running for governor of Rhode Island have promised to support and sign a bill honoring marriages of same-sex couples if elected.
General Treasurer Frank Caprio and Attorney General Patrick Lynch, both Democrats, and former Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who is running in November as an independent, made the pledge at a Statehouse rally organized by Marriage Equality Rhode Island on Wednesday before more than 200 people.
