"The decision becomes official on Oct. 28. The trial court must then enter the Supreme Court's order before same-sex couples can marry here, however. This is expected to take 10 days or slightly longer. Once this bit of legal housekeeping is wrapped up, same-sex couples won't have to wait longer than it takes to get a marriage license to wed here." [Link]

Ironically, Southern states were the main battleground in another fight for civil rights 40 years ago. Well before her death in 2006, civil rights activist Coretta Scott King, an Alabama native and the widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., began speaking out for gay rights and the freedom to marry. Few acknowledge this part of her legacy. [Link]

Collectively, we have the opportunity to send a very strong message this year. Should we win in all three states we will be able to state that those who experience same-sex marriages within their communities have found them to be no threat, that anti-marriage efforts will not win you election in a swing state, and that coming back to a state that has rejected discrimination is a waste of time and money.
