Representative Jared Polis on DOMA and that DOMA brief

AMERICAblog
June 29, 2009
Congress is in recess, so Rep. Polis was in his district Monday, not at the White House party. For those who don't know him yet, Polis is an openly gay, first-term Democrat from Colorado. Chuck Todd interviewed Polis on Hardball about Obama and gay issues. I found the DOMA segment particularly interesting. Polis made it quite clear that the problem was the DOMA brief. Polis explained, as we and many others have explained, that the Obama administration didn't have to defend the law and certainly didn't have to respond in the way they did:

Equality California, Jordan / Rustin Coalition Launch Mobilization Effort on Marriage Equality for S

Equality California
June 16, 2009
As same-sex couples who were able to legally marry last year celebrate their one-year-anniversaries, Equality California (EQCA) and Jordan / Rustin Coalition (JRC) are together launching an education and mobilization effort on the freedom to marry in LA's African-American communities. The effort includes a TV commercial, on-the-ground organizers and a dedicated field office, which will be based in South Los Angeles, a predominantly African-American community. As part of today's launch, the organizations released a television ad that features a gay African-American couple, Xavier and Michael Boykin-Haggood, along with three of their five children, Dante, Emmanuel and Fatima. The family lives in LA's Leimert Park neighborhood. Their ad is scheduled to air starting the week of June 22nd. [Link]

Dear President Obama: This is what a “fierce advocate” looks like

Daily Kos
June 16, 2009
Rachel Maddow took on the Obama administration's defense of DOMA last night on MSNBC. Maddow: "Are you ready for the latest talking points against same-sex marriage in the United States? Here we go. Are you ready? ..." Guest Howard Dean was at his firebrand best. In unvarnished language he condemned the Department of Justic brief on DOMA calling it a "big mistake" and a problem Obama will have "dig himself out of." He also forcefully stated, "But this is a huge mistake. You cannot talk about gay Americans the way gay Americans were talked about in this brief." Watch the full interview below:

"What If" is graphic designer Jessie Rauch-Dickson's submission to Project Pushback's marriage equality video contest, and captures with great simplicity the importance of "openly, publicly, [and] proudly" supporting the freedom to marry. The contest, sponsored by the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of New York City, asked videographers nationwide to submit work they believe would change hearts and minds in favor of the freedom to marry. Visit the contest to view all 68 submissions and vote for your favorites.
