Washington Legislature Expands Gay Partnerships

The Washington state House voted 62-35 yesterday to pass state Senate-approved legislation that would offer domestic partners many, but not all, of the same legal protections as non-gay married couples. The bill goes to Gov. Chris Gregoire, who said she will sign it into law. [Link]

The 110-page bill makes changes to all remaining areas of state law where currently only married couples are addressed. The bill would add same-sex domestic partners to state statutes ranging from labor and employment to pensions and other public employee benefits. [Link]

What does the timetable set by the chief justice of Washington State's supreme court for a decision on marriage equality mean? As Evan Wolfson said in an interview with the reporter, "All of this is going to be a many-year struggle." Starting off by bargaining against ourselves, he says, "misunderstands how you end opposition. You don't end opposition by appeasing it, you end opposition by allowing fair-minded people to grow." State Bar Association for adopting to support marriage equality, saying current state law is "neither fair nor as legally workable as it should be." The Wash. State Bar Association's Board of Governors voted unanimously last week to support marriage for gay couples, but has no plans to introduce marriage equality legislation. Stanley A. Bastian of Wenatchee, immediate past president of the bar association and the board's presiding officer, said in a statement released by the group, "Having one set of rules that apply to all couples engaged in recognized relationships would provide clarity and help ensure equitable treatment for all persons, regardless of sexual orientation."
