Wash. state bar association supports same-sex marriages

The Wash. State Bar Association's Board of Governors voted unanimously last week to support marriage for gay couples, but has no plans to introduce marriage equality legislation. Stanley A. Bastian of Wenatchee, immediate past president of the bar association and the board's presiding officer, said in a statement released by the group, "Having one set of rules that apply to all couples engaged in recognized relationships would provide clarity and help ensure equitable treatment for all persons, regardless of sexual orientation." The Legislature passed a measure Tuesday to expand the state’s domestic partnership law, granting same-sex couples more than 170 of the benefits and responsibilities given to married couples, including property and guardianship rights.
