"So why, ultimately, did I go through with it? In retrospect, I can see that it was all about wanting to make a commitment—pledging my devotion to the man I love; showing our family and friends that we're all more alike than we are different; refusing to stand silently by while others try to take away my rights. Only by giving up my independence at the altar, I realized, could I truly declare my independence." [Link]

What must it be like for young gays and lesbians to live at a time when—and in a state where—gays and lesbians are fully-enfranchised citizens, and gay relationships are afforded the same respect and protections that straight relationships have always been afforded. To know that love and marriage are possible for you too—not compulsory, gay “radicals,” but possible—must be incredible. [Link]

"I never thought I would have that experience of getting married. I didn't think I was missing anything. I just didn't think about it. But to see her for the first time and to cut a wedding cake, that was surreal for me and I got to experience that with our families around us. I didn't realize how special it was until I did it." The language inside the cards is neutral, with no mention of wedding or marriage, making them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. And I guess we all know why that presents such a huge threat to those who do not stand with us. And why the battle in California is so fierce. And so critically important. And why this presidential election matters so very much to us. [Link]

"Ours was not, we realized, a different institution, after all, and we were not different kinds of people. In the doing of it, it was the same as my sister’s wedding and we were the same as my sister and brother-in-law. The strange, bewildering emotions of the moment, the cake and reception, the distracted children and weeping mothers, the morning’s butterflies and the night’s drunkenness: this was not a gay marriage; it was a marriage." "I have been at the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce for 16 years," said chamber president Moe Ammar, "and I don't recall ever getting a phone call from someone interested in a gay wedding. Since the Supreme Court ruling, I have had six calls at this little chamber from same-sex couples who want to get married in our parks. Some have asked if our community is gay friendly. We were gay friendly long before the new law was passed." [Link]
