CNN anchor Anderson Cooper comes out

This morning, Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Beast published an email from CNN anchor Anderson Cooper where the star journalist says, "The fact is, I'm gay." Freedom to Marry congratulates Anderson on being true to himself by coming out and acknowledges the positive impact that his announcement will have on gay and lesbian people around the world.

In the letter, Anderson discusses his hesitancy to come out as gay, saying that he felt it was more appropriate for him, as a journalist, to not address his sexual orientation. He directly references these concerns in the letter, writing:

I've also been reminded recently that while as a society we are moving toward greater inclusion and equality for all people, the tide of history only advances when people make themselves fully visible. There continue to be far too many incidences of bullying of young people, as well as discrimination and violence against people of all ages, based on their sexual orientation, and I believe there is value in making clear where I stand. 

He explained the importance of being open about who he loves - and his popular, international voice will go a long way toward building even greater momentum for the freedom to marry nationwide. One passage from his letter speaks specifically to the significance of openly expressing love:

I love, and I am loved. In my opinion, the ability to love another person is one of God's greatest gifts, and I thank God every day for enabling me to give and share love with the people in my life.
