Freedom to Marry celebrates 10th Anniversary with Cheers to 10 Years event

On Monday, April 28th, Freedom to Marry will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a celebration event in New York City, "Cheers to 10 Years." Hosted by Cynthia Nixon, the night will commemorate the 10 years that have passed since Massachusetts first enacted the freedom to marry in 2004 and pay tribute to the groundbreaking efforts of Freedom to Marry and its founder, Evan Wolfson, who has been dubbed the "godfather of gay marriage."

The celebration, sponsored by Skyy Vodka, will include a reception and theatrical showcase produced by Peter Spears and will debut "Until We Could," a short film version of an original poem by 2012 Presidential Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco, written exclusively for Freedom to Marry. The film is by Sundance directors David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) & Yen Tan (Pit Stop) and features voiceovers by Ben Foster (Lone Survivor) & Robin Wright (House of Cards).

Also featured will be political strategist Margaret Hoover and an original composition by Tony Award nominee Andrew Lippa (I Am Harvey Milk, Big Fish, The Addams Family) performed by Tony Award winner Laura Benanti (Gypsy, The Sound of Music Live) and a choreographed dance by MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham’s company Abraham.In.Motion. 

Freedom to Marry is the largest funder of marriage campaigns in the United States, having so far invested tens of millions of dollars to win the freedom to marry in 17 states and Washington, DC, grow public support to record levels (with 59% of Americans say they support marriage for all), overturn federal marriage discrimination, and lay the groundwork for a nationwide victory at the United States Supreme Court.
