Mayor Greg Fischer of Louisville, KY joins Mayors for the Freedom to Marry

Today, Mayor Greg Fischer of Louisville, Kentucky signed on to Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a broad-based and nonpartisan group of mayors who believe that all people should be able to share in the love and commitment of marriage. The announcement comes just before mayors from all across the country convene this weekend for the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Dallas.

Two other Kentucky mayors are also Mayors for the Freedom to Marry - Mayor Bill Sheckles of Bardstown, and Sherry Carran of Covington. Nationally, nearly 450 mayors have pledged their support for the freedom to marry.

Mayor Fischer said today:

Louisvillians, Kentuckians, and the rest of America, have been on a journey towards support of marriage for same-sex couples. It is clear to me that discrimination of any form should not be tolerated and that committed gay and lesbian couples deserve the protections that only marriage can provide. I am proud to add my name to Mayors for the Freedom to Marry and pledge my support for fairness and family.

Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a project of Freedom to Marry, launched in 2012 and now includes 400 mayors from 38 states across America who are making the case for marriage in their cities, with North Dakota the newest state to be represented. The effort is chaired by Kasim Reed of Atlanta; Julián Castro of San Antonio; Michael Nutter of Philadelphia; Annise Parker of Houston; Greg Stanton of Phoenix; Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles; and Republican Mayor Kevin Faulconer of San Diego.

Freedom to Marry founder and president Evan Wolfson applauded Mayor Fischer's support today. He said:

The values invoked by Mayor Fischer in support of the freedom to marry are the values a strong majority of Americans are embracing all over the country. Mayor Fischer, like other mayors, understands that the strength and health of any city are enhanced when all families are protected and supported. It's time the Supreme Court issuing a national freedom-to-marry ruling.

The Mayors for the Freedom to Marry range from geographically diverse cities both large and small, in states with the freedom to marry, states that are considering marriage legislation this year, and states without any relationship recognition for same-sex couples. Marriage supporters can encourage their own mayors to join Mayors for the Freedom to Marry by asking them to sign the official pledge.

Urge your mayor to join Mayors for the Freedom to Marry.
