More than 3,000 Georgians urge Attorney General to stop defending discrimination

This week, on July 21, Georgia Equality delivered more than 3,080 petitions signed by Georgia residents urging Attorney General Sam Olens to drop his defense of the state's constitutional amendment that restricts marriage to different-sex couples.

A.G. Olens filed his brief in support of marriage discrimination yesterday - but just before he did, he received these 3,000+ letters, a strong demonstration from people from across the Peach State that Olens is on the wrong side of history by defending the ban. The case currently working its way through the courts system in Georgia is Inniss v. Aderhold, a federal case brought by Lambda Legal seeking the freedom to marry in Georgia and respect for marriages legally performed in other states.

In the past year, Attorneys General from all across the country - including Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Washington, Virginia, California, Nevada, and Illinois - have refused to defend marriage discrimination, dropping their defense of the ban and supporting the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.

Freedom to Marry was proud to support this action with Georgia Equality through Southerners for the Freedom to Marry, the campaign we launched this year in partnership with 16 state and regional organizations dedicated to winning equality for same-sex couples and their families in the South.
