Nevada Republican Party removes anti-marriage language from official platform

This weekend, at the annual convention of the Nevada Republican Party, the state GOP voted in favor of removing language in the official party platform that opposes the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. 

"The issue was how can we back out of people's personal lives," Dave Hockaday, a member of the platform committee, explained, adding, "We need to focus on issues where we can have an impact."

The move from the state GOP follows a similar decision from the Clark County GOP, who earlier this month voted to remove their discriminatory language in their official platform. 

Increasingly, Republicans across the country are reflecting on why marriage matters and coming to the conclusion that all people in the United States should have the freedom to marry the person they love. Nationally, a strong 40% of Republicans support marriage, with 61% of Republicans under the age of 30 saying that they are in favor. 

Even in Nevada, Republican Governor Sandoval has said that he and the state will no longer defend anti-marriage laws in the state, declaring them indefensible.
