WATCH: ‘Living in Limbo’ documentary showcases lesbian families in Alabama

Hearts and minds are changing across America at an increasingly rapid pace: With recent polling showing an all-time high of 50% of Southerners supporting the freedom to marry for same-sex couples, it’s clear that we’re making progress – but there’s still much work to do.

In partnership with 16 state and regional organizations and 14 honorary co-chairs, Freedom to Marry launched Southerners for the Freedom to Marry in February of this year – a first-of-its-kind public education campaign to grow public support to a solid majority in the Southern states.

As a part of our continued focus on winning the South as an integral part the Roadmap to Victory and setting the stage for a national resolution at the Supreme Court, Freedom to Marry is proud to be a partner of State & Union: Lesbian Families Living in the Deep South.

A Living in Limbo documentary, State & Union “depicts real-life stories of lesbians in the Deep South that include pain and perseverance, strength and humor.” Inspired by the highly acclaimed photography exhibition Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South, which features photographs by Carolyn Sherer, this documentary focuses on families living in Birmingham, Alabama.

In order to make this project a success, the producers of State & Union need to raise $100,000 by July 8, 2014. Our research has shown definitively that Americans sharing their own personal stories is one of the most powerful ways to change hearts and minds and grow the majority for marriage, which is why we’re so proud to be supporting this project. Please join us by contributing to Living in Limbo’s Indiegogo page right now!

Freedom to Marry founder and president Evan Wolfson explained the significance of the project today. He said:

State & Union shows and tells the stories of lesbian families in the South - their love, their humor, their struggle, and their strength - and will help spark the conversations that grow support and lead to change. It's stories like these that explain why Southerners, like other Americans, are coming to understand better the lives and commitment of gay families in the community and why they value the freedom to marry - and joining the nationwide majority for the marriage.
