PHOTOS: On the first day of weddings, same-sex couples in Minnesota tie the knot

Thursday, August 1 was a day for the history books in Minnesota. The freedom to marry, passed by the legislature and signed into law by Governor Mark Dayton just months after the state united to defeat an anti-gay constitutional amendment that sought to permanently restrict marriage to different-sex couples, took effect - and people across the state of Minnesota celebrated the amazing day.
Dozens of couples waited until the law took effect at midnight on Thursday morning to tie the knot - where they stood up in front of their friends and family members, declared their commitment, exchanged vows, and said "I Do."
Heidi M. Garrido of HM Photography LLC snapped some wonderful photos of the first day of weddings in Minnesota. Make sure to check out Heidi's work HERE. She shared some photos from the midnight ceremony - and a few more of weddings that occurred later in the day - with Freedom to Marry.
At the Hennepin County Court House, Heidi took photos as dozens of couples married in ceremonies officiated by the Mayor of Minneapolis, R.T. Ryback.
Hundreds of spectators congregated to ring in Thursday, August 1 - officially declared Freedom to Marry Day by Gov. Dayton - and watch as couples tied the knot.
Later in the day, Heidi also photographed the wedding of Tracy and Annie, who married in Minneapolis as well.
And finally, Heidi photographed a ceremony between Philip and Jason, who said "I Do" in Richfield, Minnesota on Thursday evening.
