San Diego Mayor Faulconer (R) signs on as chair of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry

Today, the Republican mayor of San Diego, Kevin Faulconer, became the newest chair of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a coalition of nearly 400 mayors from across the country who support marriage for same-sex couples.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer said today in a statement:

My strong support for marriage is rooted in talking to gay and lesbian people and hearing their personal stories. I can't look at my gay and lesbian constituents and tell them that their life commitment to the person they love isn't worth the same respect, dignity, and protections that straight people have. I came to that decision after a thoughtful approach, and it was an important personal decision for me. As a Republican, I value freedom, family, and individual liberty; and allowing gay people to marry fulfills those conservative ideals. I'm proud to join Mayors for the Freedom to Marry to continue making the case for marriage nationwide.

The mayor joins six other chairs - Julián Castro of San Antonio, Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, Michael Nutter of Philadelphia, Kasim Reed of Atlanta, Greg Stanton of Phoenix, and Annise Parker of Houston - as chairs of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry.

Freedom to Marry founder and president Evan Wolfson applauded the mayor's support today. He said:

The values of freedom and family invoked by Mayor Faulconer in support of the freedom to marry are the values more and more Republicans are embracing as they move toward support as well. Mayors have a crucial role in advancing the well-being of the families, businesses, and communities that they serve, including gay and lesbian Americans who want to take care of their family and make a lifelong commitment to the person they love.

Mayors and the cities they represent have long played critical roles in advancing civil rights and treatment for all Americans - and this is no less true of the freedom to marry. In each of the states where we have won marriage, support from local elected officials has helped to tip the scales in our favor. When mayors and other elected officials speak up at the local level, they fuel a conversation and demonstrate that all members of their local communities - including same-sex couples and their families - matter and deserve basic fairness and dignity.
